Peripheral Aneurysms
Peripheral artery aneurysm is an enlargement of the artery (other than the aorta). The most common peripheral artery aneurysms occur in the legs. Risk of rupture is low with these types of aneurysms, but these types of aneurysms may lead to thromboembolism, which can block blood flow to your leg.
Risk Factors for Peripheral Aneurysms
- Smoking
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Family history of disease
Diagnosis
- Arterial ultrasound
- CTA (computerized tomographic angiogram) scan
Treatment
We can offer the following treatment options:
- Observation: Regular ultrasound monitoring of the size of the aneurysm.
- Endograft repair: This involves stent grafts (similar to AAA repair) and is a much shorter recovery time.
- Bypass surgery: A bypass (using graft or vein) is created to bypass the flow of blood around the aneurysm.
