Renal Artery STenosis

Renal artery stenosis is the narrowing of one or both renal arteries. This is caused by atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). The renal arteries supply blood to the kidneys. Renal artery stenosis can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure).

Risk Factors for Renal Artery Stenosis

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Lack of exercise
  • Family history of disease

Diagnosis

  • Renal artery ultrasound
  • CTA (computerized tomographic angiogram) scan
  • Renal artery angiogram

Treatment

We can offer the following treatment options:

  • Observation: Regularly scheduled renal artery ultrasound to evaluate the severity of renal artery stenosis
  • Angioplasty and stenting: Minimally invasive procedure (endovascular) using stents and balloons to open arteries to improve blood flow to the kidneys.
